Since 2025, Saved By The Sign has been commissioned by Deutsche Gehörlosenzeitung (DGZ), Germany’s national Deaf magazine, to write a quarterly column exploring some of the most pressing social, cultural and political issues affecting Deaf communities today. The series brings Black Deaf perspectives to an international readership while contributing to wider conversations about equity, representation, leadership, identity and community building.

Drawing on lived experience, historical research, social science perspectives and years of engagement across Deaf communities worldwide, the column examines topics including race, migration, belonging, power, solidarity, community care and inequality. Through critical analysis, storytelling and social commentary, the articles connect broader social issues to the realities of Deaf people’s lives, encouraging readers to engage with complex and often overlooked conversations shaping Deaf communities globally.

Published quarterly, the series has featured articles including The Power of Community Care, We Lead. We Build. We Belong., “BIPOC Communities” Is Not Real, Name Us Properly, When Solidarity Becomes Exploitation and DEAF SAME, But Same for Who? By amplifying underrepresented perspectives and fostering critical dialogue, the series contributes to public education and helps shape conversations about race, identity, power and belonging within Deaf communities across Europe and beyond.
