Reimagining Podcasting for Deaf Audiences

In 2022, SBTS created the world’s first podcast produced entirely in International Sign, making conversations accessible to Deaf people across linguistic and national boundaries. Hosted by Founder Lydia Gratis and Co Founder Romel Belcher, the series emerged from a desire to create media that Deaf people could access directly, without relying on spoken language, subtitles or interpretation.

Across eight episodes, Lydia and Romel explored some of the most significant conversations taking place in Deaf communities at the time, including activism, tokenism, representation, masculinity, identity, belonging and the experiences of Black Deaf people. Through candid discussion, personal reflection and community perspectives, the podcast created space for honest conversations that were often missing from mainstream Deaf media.

By centring International Sign, the series connected viewers from different countries through a shared visual language and demonstrated the potential of Deaf led media to foster dialogue, build community and amplify underrepresented voices on a global scale.

Did You Know? Each episode title was inspired by the naming style used in the television series Friends, with titles such as The One About Tokenism, The One About Fear and The One About Representation. The playful format made complex conversations more approachable while giving the series its own recognisable identity.
